Rihanna & Lupita Nyong’o to Star in Netflix Film Directed By Ava DuVernay & Written by Issa Rae
Just when you thought original stories were dying, here comes one that started from the web and caused a fan frenzy to make it happen.
EW is reporting that Netflix, while at the Cannes Film Festival, has secured the rights to distribute a film project pairing Grammy winner Rihanna with Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o. Not only that but the film will be directed by Ava DuVernay from a script that will be written by Issa Rae (Insecure).
The concept is based on a Tumblr post and photo of Lupita Nyong’o and Rihanna at a fashion show in 2014 was successful. The photo was posted on Tumblr by “elizabitchtaylor,” which said, “They look like they’re in a heist movie with Rihanna as the tough-as-nails leader/master thief and Lupita as the genius computer hacker.” That started an exchange between all four ladies to make this film happen and so it’s now going to be real.
Rihanna is currently shooting Ocean’s Eight and will be seen in Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets this summer. Nyong’o just wrapped shooting Black Panther and will next be seen in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. DuVernay is currently in post-production on A Wrinkle in Time for Disney, while Issa Rae is gearing up to have the second season of her hit show Insecure start on HBO in July.
EW is states that reps for Rae told Vanity Fair “the original Twitter users who imagined the concept for this film will be credited and included in some form.”)
Here’s a Twitter breakdown on how story went from fake news to real news.
