With Warner Bros. shutting down the DC Extended Film Universe for the time being, the movie division has shared some major news this week. According to Variety, Idris Elba has signed on officially join the DC Film Universe. The London actor is set to replace Will Smith as Deadshot in Suicide Squad 2. James Gun, who was fired last year from Marvel Comics, is set to write and direct the upcoming sequel, which is set for an August 6, 2021 release date.
The rest of the cast has not yet firmed up, but one can imagine that Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn) will be on board. The actress’s character in the original Suicide Squad was so popular that she has since gotten her own spin-off, the insanely titled Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), which revolves around a group of female super-villains and will hit theaters on February 7, 2020. That film, directed by newcomer Cathy Yan, also stars Jurnee Smollett-Bell,Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Ewan McGregor, among others.
