Jay-Z Gives Speech at Trayvon Martin Peace Walk

Jay-Z joined hundreds of marchers at this year’s Peace Walk & Peace Talk in Miami Gardens, Florida on Saturday (Feb. 10), in memory of the late Trayvon Martin.

According to the Miami Herald, the rapper joined Martin’s mother Sybrina Fulton and father Tracy Martin on stage at the Betty T. Ferguson Amphitheater, where he gave a short speech comparing Martin to figures such as Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr.

“We want to make sure that we stand and support and never forget that Trayvon serves as a beacon of light to the people out here. So, you guys never have to go through the pain and hurt that these guys went through,” Jay-Z stated. “His name will sit alongside the greats whom lost their lives to push our culture forward — the Martin Luther Kings, the Gandhis. That’s the intention we set so his name will serve as a beacon of light and hope to push our culture forward in a better direction.”

The Peace Walk & Peace Talk is held annually in Miami Garden’s in memory of the late Martin — the unarmed African-American teen who was shot and killed at the hands of George Zimmerman on Feb. 26, 2012. Zimmerman was eventually acquitted in Martin’s death.

Jay-Z has been working on a docu-series entitled Rest In Power: The Trayvon Martin Story, which documents the life of young Martin. It is set to air later this year.
